What’s new in Fortnite Season 8?
Early Thursday morning Fortnite updated to include the new features which range from fun pirate themed outfits and Banana Fortnite Skins, just saying that makes me smile. All the way to a cannon which fires you huge distances and can also be used to deal some pretty considerable damage.
It’s a bit like the Canon in Sea of Thieves albeit more cartoony. Read more about our original update here
Oh, you wanted to know more about Peely? The banana skin?
Well, it’s amazing. You start off as an unripened green banana and slowly ripen as you progress through the match turning more and more yellow until you begin to peel at the top. What if you get hit? Well, you bruise like a banana of course!
This is probably the most fun Fortnite skin you can have, it’s like having a match timer on your body as you run around. Not the best for camping though, you’ll stick out like…well, like a banana.
We can imagine a lot of people wanting to buy this from the Fortnite item shop.
As you expect with a new season there’s a whole host of new emotes (100 to be exact) and new skins to play around with.
Some large pieces of the map have been destroyed or altered. Tilted Towers are gone, it looks like the earthquakes finally toppled them.
The volcano is now one of the most prominent features on the map and it’s pouring liquid hot magma into the cracks left by the earthquake throughout the map which, – SURPRISE! – hurts to walk through! It sends you hopping into the air and causes some hefty damage to you which makes for an interesting change in the environment.
When I tried the new updates I ended up in a couple of 1v1s running around them and the downfall of us both ended up being the magma we accidentally fell in at low health.
This volcano has also pushed up what appears to be ruins of an Aztec Temple which is – as history buffs might expect – full of loot. So far it seems to be the most popular starting point making it a pretty dangerous place to go in the early stages of a game unless you’re wanting to Duke it out for the best loot and don’t mind the frustration of a quick death.
Around the sides and top of the volcano are some thermal vents which are forcing out hot air at high pressure, catapulting your character out of there if you need it.
There are also some neat rope slides to help you out if you need a quick escape. There aren’t many fast transport options now as the cart and the Stormwing have been removed from the game.
I think it’s probably for aesthetic purposes and they’ll be replaced by something more fitting soon…
Speaking of which…
Those Fortnite eggs…
New rumours are suggesting these eggs could become dragons which will replace some of the faster transport methods.
It would also bring Fortnite very much into its own style to distinguish it more from the likes of Apex Legends.
Something the company seem to have been struggling with a little since it’s release. Epic is having to play catch up on features that Apex has dropped from the get-go.
Many of these features have been requested by the Fortnite community for a while like improved communications, it’s good that a bit of healthy competition is pushing them to work on these features.
Ready to set sail me maties?
By far one of the best additions to the map is the updated Lazy Lagoon, which features an all-new, loot-filled, honest-to-goodness Pirate Ship.
This is one of the main draws of the new map for me, it’s such a unique aesthetic and makes for some cool showdowns.
Not going to lie about this I’ve gotten pretty defensive holed up in there. Burrowing into the captain’s cabin and playing like it’s my property.
Mechanics changes in Fortnite Season 8
The new party assist feature lets all players in your sorry contribute to completing your daily and weekly challenges which let you rack up your Battle Pass that bit easier.
Some eagle-eyed players over on Reddit appear to have spotted some Respawn vans similar to the vehicles in Apex Legends. These will allow you to come back into the fray after you’ve been killed, teabagged and thoroughly disgraced, in order to regain your honour in battle.
So what are you most excited about in this update to Fortnite? Do you think there’s anything Epic should have done differently in this update?
Can you imagine this skin being used in a real esports match, would surely get a few slips up happening with that one!
