With Round 2 of the New Challengers Stage done and dusted, we wrap up Day 1 of the IEM Katowice 2019 CSGO major. Before we head into Day 2, with promotion and elimination series coming up, we take a look at the last batch of matchups.
Not so EZ4ENCE
Starting off Round 2 with a set of 0-1 matchups, there was no sight of the HellRaisers that had been run over by FaZe Clan earlier, as HellRaisers were on fire, mowing down ENCE ending the first half on a 13-2 scoreline. The Finns were not out of the game yet, as they quickly started mounting a comeback, slowly getting rounds on the board. Despite a valiant attempt, thanks to Özgür “woxic” Eker’s superstar performance, HellRaisers would finally close the map 16-12, crushing the hopes of a comeback.
The second CSGO Major matchup would see BIG face off against the Frenchmen of G2 on Mirage. Neither team looked dominant, as the match was a back and forth affair. Despite a strong performance from the German captain, Fatih “gob b” Dayik, the Germans would not be able to win the map, as G2 proved too strong, closing the map 16-13, sending BIG down into the 0-2 bracket.
Coming straight off a surprising result from their match against Cloud9, MIBR looked to regain confidence in their matchup against the lowest seeded team in the stage, compLexity. coL would look like a tough opponent however, as the first half would end 8-7 with MIBR on the backfoot. MIBR would regain composure though, as they gave coL no chance to get back in the map, sealing the deal 16-9.
CS:GO Major Favorites fall at IEM Katowice
Surprise favorite, NRG would face AVANGAR in the 0-1 bracket, looking nothing like the NRG that went 3-0 in the New Challengers Stage, as they ended the first half on Overpass 4-11. AVANGAR would not be able to hold NRG in check, however, as the NA team would bounce back off a great start, as their comeback looked likely as they began stringing multiple rounds together. Another comeback attempt today would be denied, as AVANGAR would close the map 16-13, meaning NRG will face elimination tomorrow.
The superstar team, FaZe Clan would face off against the “Boys from Down Under” on Inferno. A strong map for both sides, who would trade rounds back and forth with big plays coming from both sides. Most impressively would be AZR’s ace to secure the Renegades their map point. Despite gaining a few rounds, the Aussies would close the map 16-14, securing a 2-0 record in the stage.
One of the longest and shortest CSGO major maps at IEM Katowice so far
Vitality and NaVi looked to be an exciting matchup as both teams were looking strong off their opening match. Coming off strong 6-1, NaVi started strong, but all the cogs started working in the Vitality machine as the Frenchmen would force overtime. Close situations and clutches would force the map into overtime after overtime. NaVi would finally power through, outliving Vitality 25-22 thanks to incredible individual plays from Egor “flamie” Vasiliyev and Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev.
Despite being in the matchups later, Astralis vs Cloud9 would finish earlier on Train, than the Vitality vs NaVi match, as Astralis would completely demolish Cloud9, 16-0. This will be the second 16-0 at a major, also by Astralis which reflected their 16-0 against MIBR at Faceit London 2018.
The final CSGO major matchup of Day 1 would see one of the tournament favourites Team Liquid go up against the legendary Swedish organization, Ninjas in Pyjamas.
The NA squad started off on the right foot starting the map out with an 8-2 scoreline, demolishing an otherwise well playing NiP.
The Swedes would make it a close affair, yet Liquid would finally plant the boot on the ground and close the map 16-13.
