MDL Macau group stage ends with domination of Team Liquid and showcase some strong performance from Chinese Dota 2 teams.
Mars Dota 2 League returns with MDL Macau Group Stage, where eight of the best teams in the world battle between February 20-24. Unlike in previous editions of MDL events, this tournament isn’t a part of Valve’s Dota Pro Circuit. The list of participating teams is top tier though, and MDL once again proved to be a fiercely competitive tournament from the very beginning.
At the end of MDL Macau group stage, Team Liquid finishes at top seed, dropping only two games in the process. Liquid lost one of their games from RNG, when Monet blew the game completely open on his Lifestealer, and other one to the Vici Gaming. Both VG and RNG finished in the top 4 seeds, therefore will start the playoff rounds in the upper bracket.
The absence of EG’s star midlaner Sumail proves to be a non-issue for the American powerhouse. CCnC is doing an incredible job subbing in for him as EG managed to claim their spot in the top four. VG and RNG secured the remaining two spots in the upper bracket.
Newbee got the worst of the tiebreaker rules, as they lost in head-to-head match-ups against EG and VG. For this reason they will start playoffs from the lower bracket.
Besides the not-so-fortunate Newbee, CIS juggernauts Virtus.pro, Chinese EHOME and Invictus Gaming fill the lower bracket. A poor performance by Virtus.pro, currently ranked 2nd strongest team in the world, is probably the biggest surprise of the MDL Macau group stage. The question that comes to mind is VP taking this tournament as seriously, as winning it grants no DPC points. I mean, after all we could see them playing Apex Legends during the drafting phase
That wraps up MDL Macau Group Stage! Playoffs begin today!
In the first round of the lower bracket, Newbee plays versus EHOME while iG faces VP in the best of one series. In the upper bracket Liquid will go up against RNG in a BO3 series. A perfect opportunity to get their revenge after the Chinese rising stars took a game against them in the round-robin. EG will face off against Vici Gaming.
