“Choices? What do you know about choices?”
Baptiste lost his parents in the middle of the Omic war. According to him, the war “robbed him” of his choices, usually having to choose the worst of two options to survive. This is the lie he told himself to validate the choices he had made, as he had joined a militant group who had pillaged their city that was war-torn. Realizing he had a choice, Baptiste, Overwatch new hero, fights to make a change, whether it be through his bullets or bandages.
Baptiste is the newest hero to be added to the Overwatch ranks, coming in as the 30th hero and the 9th newest hero released since the game’s initial release. The Haitian warrior is coming to the game as a DPS healer soon. While he is in PTR, public testing realm, Baptiste has no true release date just yet. However, pre-patch, this warrior seems almost overpowered, or broken. What makes Baptiste broken?
Overwatch Baptiste Abilities
Pre-patch Batiste is hitting with an arsenal of abilities. His exo boots allows him to jump higher, with a 1 second recharge, and immune against Sombra’s hack ability. Baptiste’s biotic launcher has a primary and secondary fire.
Firing off at 3 rounds per 0.3 seconds with a 0.35-second recovery, this occurs in three bursts. His primary also has a range of 20 to 40 meters. As an effort to counteract his weapon from being too strong, the crosshairs will move up as he fires, like a recoil. He is able to make headshots, having an ammo max of 45. The reload speed, just like his secondary fire is 1.5 seconds. If Baptiste reloads this weapon, he will reload the secondary simultaneously.
Secondary Fire: This can be seen as Baptiste’s healing weapon. This does 60 HP of healing as it does 1 short per 0.8 seconds. However, his healing range is 3 meters, causing this hero to be close to anyone that may need healing Just like the reload time for his primary weapon, it is 1.5 seconds. However, if continuously firing, the reload time is 0.95 seconds as his ammo max is 10. This weapon does not allow for self heals, as well as his bullets will go through fully healed allies.
All three of Baptiste’s abilities, including his ultimate, play mostly like support. Baptiste, Overwacth new hero plays damage as well, such as Ana and Brigette.
This allows Baptiste to heal himself and allies over a 5 seconds span. The radius of this ability is 10 meters and will do 30 HP of healing per second giving a hero 150 hp over its 5-second duration. If an ally is already in the burst when it occurs, they will continue to gain its effect outside leaving the 10-meter range. However, if they are outside the burst when it occurs, they will not gain any of its effects. Once the burst is used, it will have a 15-second cooldown.
This has to be Baptiste’s second to most broken ability currently. His field will allow a hero to gain 250 HP of health within its 6-meter radius. It can last between 8 seconds with the generator and 9 seconds with the field. This does have a 20 second cool down. This field prevents any ally from going below 20% of health, keeping them immune from death. This also means that if an ally was to go into the field that is below 20%, they will automatically get their health up to 20%. Both the generator and the field will ignore barriers, however, Sombra’s hack will down the field as it lasts 10 seconds and the generator does not last that long. If the generator is destroyed, the field will continue going for another second. As of right now, there is still a glitched, addressed by Blizzard, that the generator can be frozen, but still continue to function.
This is it folks, the broken. The matrix ability is Baptiste’s ultimate with a charge rate, passively, of 1% per 3.50 seconds and needs 1750 points for the charge. The max range of the matrix is 35 meters with a with of 5 meters and a height of 4 meters. Baptiste’s ultimate lasts 8 seconds. During this 8 second duration, healing and damage are boosted by 100% of an allies normal stats. The matrix is melee-based projectiles such as Roadhog’s chain hook, however, projectile attacks such as Ashe’s dynamite are amplified. When other amplification abilities are being used, such as Mercy’s damage boost, the effects are doubled resulting in a 230% damage boost if combined. If need be, the orientation of where the matrix needs to be can be changed when deployed by just hitting the ultimate key again. The only way the matrix can be destroyed before the duration ends will be Sombra’s ultimate, “EMP”.
The End Result?
With the introduction of Baptiste, Overwatch new hero , he will be a very heal heavy support. Due to all of his abilities, he will be able to do a lot of damage boosting and heal boosting with another support character such as Mercy with him. Baptiste will, however, be very weak to Sombra as her hack and ultimate ability will cause many of his abilities to be destroyed upon being used. If used right, Baptiste will be very useful to any team, especially those using a “pharmacy”, a Mercy and a Pharaoh duo. From war-torn orphan to hero, Baptiste will be hitting the Overwatch game hard.
