The group stages of the WESG World Finals draws to a close, after a long series of matches that ultimately saw the final 8 teams that will join the teams from Day 1 set to play in the playoffs tomorrow. Two teams from each group ranging from E to H progressed further on, ranging from both favorites and upsets. We take a look at the final group stage matches from Chongqing before we head into the playoffs.
fnatic proceed to playoffs at the CSGO WESG World Finals
Two heavy favorites in the form of fnatic and Windigo went onwards from Group E at WESG whilst the Spanish project around Oscar “mixwell” Cañellas are forced to go home after both a 0-2 smacking by Bulgarian Windigo (16-4 and 19-16) and a 1-1 tie against the Swedes (5-16 and 16-13)
Group F saw the national team, Russia secure two perfect 2-0 series against WARDELL N Friends (19-17 and 16-14) and Imperial (22-18 and 16-9), which secured them their spot in the playoffs, whilst the second spot in Group F surprisingly went to Panda who although lost 0-2 to WARDELL N Friends (16-11 and 19-17) managed to grab both a tie against Imperial (16-9 and 8-16) and a close 2-0 win over Russia (16-14 and 22-20).
Pleasant surprises and letdowns in China
Ukrainian national mix, Ukraine and TNC hailing from the Philippines grabbed the two playoffs spots from Group G, sending the two other Asian teams packing. Despite coming off a bad start with an 0-2 against Ukraine (16-14 and 16-14), TNC managed to bounce back after handing ENZO a double 16-6 loss to win the series 2-0 and tying maps with 5POWER (16-6 and 13-16), securing their spot.
One of the bigger upsets happened in final Group H where Australian Chiefs disappointed after poor showings against both Alpha Red (7-16 and 16-10) and Viva Algeria who handed them a knock-out 0-2 series (16-12 and 16-6). Thereby, Alpha Red grabbed their playoff spot with first seed, and Viva Algeria taking second.
